BISHOP JOHN PHILLIP WORTHY, SR., was born on August 14, 1934, to the union of RoseVelt and Eugene Worthy. Bishop Worthy was educated in the Waco public school system and received his General Education Development (GED) certificate at Houston Community College in Houston, Texas.
He proposed to Rebecca on January 14, 1972, and married Rebecca Beasely McCardell, mother of four, Mirian Denise, Viola Renee, Grady Earle, and LaDonna Jeanne, on February 26, 1972. He transitioned from life to death six weeks shy of their 50th Golden Wedding Anniversary.
To the union were born two daughters, Rebecca Alechia and Nicole Renise. Bishop John P. Worthy lovingly raised all six children in the fear and admonition of the Lord. Proverbs 18:22 says, “Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing and obtaineth favor of the Lord.” Bishop Worthy certainly found his “Good Thing” in Becky and would tell her daily, “I will always love you.”
After 20 years of diligent service, Bishop Worthy, Supervisor with the City of Houston, retired. Bishop Worthy, Sr., accepted his call to the ministry as a young man. He loved the Lord and worked tirelessly in the Church of God in Christ, Inc., in the Southeast District of Texas, under the leadership of Robert Woodard. He loved his family, and in 1990, moved to the city of Los Angeles, California, where he continued his service in obedience to the Lord.
As Pastor and Founder of Evangelistic Outreach Ministries (EOM), he served in the Moreno Valley, California area, conducting church services and bible studies in the home of Missionary Bonnie Garrett (his sister-in-law). He returned to Houston, Texas, on November 25, 2019, and remained unto death. He was a dedicated and loyal member of God’s Abundant Love Ministries until his health failed.
Bishop John P. Worthy was preceded in death by his parents, RoseVelt and Eugene Worthy; brother, John L. Worthy; three sons and one daughter, Amos, John Jr., Bruce Worthy, and Cathy Worthy-Phillips; and grandson, Jonathan Kelley. He leaves to mourn his memory: his loving and devoted wife, aka BFF, Rebecca Beasley; nine children, Gladys Pradia, Cleveland Worthy, Cecil Worthy, M. Denise Kelley (Joe), Viola Soloman, Grady McCardell (Jill), LaDonna McCardell (Reginald), Rebecca Alechia Worthy, and Nicole Worthy; fifteen spousal grandchildren, Joe Nathan II (Toni), LaShonna McCardell, Brittany Blackman (Dominique), Viola Kennell (Marvin), Anthony Soloman, Terrance Soloman (D’onna), Phillip Worthy (Akilah), Blake McCardell (Reagan), Jasmin McCardell, Ciara McCardell, Kennedi Mays, LaShelle McCardell, Grant Mays, and Madison Mays; twelve spousal great-grandchildren; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
