Ruth E. Balka

November 1, 1937 — April 3, 2024

Ruth Elaine Balka, a Jane of all trades, exemplified the notion that life circumstances do not dictate one's destiny.

Born the only child to Wilson and Willie Lee Balka on Nov. 1, 1937, in Houston, TX, she proudly graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1955.

Despite initially aspiring to become a pharmacist at Texas Southern University, fate had other plans. Undeterred, Ruth transitioned into the medical field as a lab assistant at the Blood Center of Houston.

Motherhood brought new challenges, prompting her to explore carpentry and childcare, showcasing her adaptability and versatility.

Throughout life's challenges, Ruth's passion for cooking endured. Experimenting with herbs and spices, she turned her kitchen into a laboratory, with her children serving as willing taste-testers.

After raising her five children, she pursued her culinary dreams, earning a degree in Culinary Arts from Houston Community College in June 1994. Specializing in Cuban Cuisine and chocolate, she became a true chocolatier for Houston’s Chocolate Designs. Even after leaving that position, her kitchen remained her sanctuary, where she crafted delicacies like sweet n' spicy pickles, delectable tea cakes, and melt-in-your-mouth oatmeal and chocolate chip cookies.

Despite her gentle demeanor, Ruth was also skilled in the art of hunting and fishing.

As a devoted mother and grandmother, she actively supported her children's interests, notably as a proud band parent for the Aldine Mustang Band.

Ruth's deep faith and love for God enriched her life greatly, evident in her Bible readings and heartfelt worship. She loved listening to many gospel greats such as Shirley Caesar, Mahalia Jackson, and The Mississippi Mass Choir.

She leaves to cherish her memory 5 children: Felicia Coffey, Katrina Balka, Kathy Bryant (Raymond), Tonja Jones (Tony), and Charles Balka. 10 grandchildren: William Coffey, Desiree Coffey (Charlie), Eric Coffey (Deanna), Tawny Jones, Jacob Jones, Nissa Jones, Tony Jones Jr., Evan Jones, Nyla Balka, Bria Balka. 7 great-grandchildren: Elise Schoubroek, Destiny Thomas, Ja’Qory Hall, Jaa’Markus Hall, Keyon Coffey, Elijah Coffey, Devan Callihan Jr., and 3 great-great-grandchildren, and a multitude of cherished friends and relatives.

Ruth's legacy is one of resilience, passion, and enduring love.
