Wilbert Richard Stillwell, Jr., the second of 6 children born to the late Wilbert R. Stillwell, Sr. and Katie Marie Usher-Stillwell in San Antonio, Texas, on January 28, 1947. He departed this life on Saturday, January 31, 2026.
Richard, as he preferred to be called by friends in his adult years, couldn’t escape his childhood nickname ‘Bubba’ given by his big sister and his siblings.
He accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized in 1958 by the late Rev. F. N. Williams, Pastor, Antioch Baptist Church.
Richard graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1966. While in high school, he took career and technical education classes specializing in carpentry and woodwork. Those early learning experiences helped him become a top-notch carpenter, as he built kitchen cabinets, fences, room expansions and plethora of other things. His carpentry skills were halted as he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
He always wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps by enlisting in the military. He joined the Air Force in 1971. He was a proud military veteran. Richard even sang in the Air Force choir. He served with honor and deep commitment to his country. He proudly wore his badge of honor along with his Loud Music, Iron clad Handshake, Air Force shirts, specialized boots with his name on them, and his adorned hats. Everyone knew he was a proud VETERAN. If you asked him how he was doing in sickness or health, his reply was always, “I’M STILL WELL”.
He leaves to mourn his passing his 5 children: Wilbert III, Michelle, Samara, Richard & Kobe; his beloved partner, Bernell Hawkins; his sister, Cheryl; his brothers, Michael & Anthony; and grandkids, great grandkid, a host of family members and dear friends.
Bubba’s personality was loud and proud, you knew when he was in a room. His big loud presents will truly be missed!
