Deacon Eddie Hughes Obituary

Eddie Anthony Hughes was born at Jefferson Davis Hospital in Houston, TX, on May 13, 1945 to the parents of Eddie and Vivian Hughes (deceased).  As a young child, Eddie attended Blackshear Elem.,  Miller Junior High and Yates Senior.  He had a love for sports and he was an amazing athlete.  Eddie received numerous accolades for his talents on the football field; which included him being named an All-American Football Player in high school.  After graduating from Jack Yates Senior High school, Eddie was recruited by Prairie View University; where he played on the starting lineup as a fullback from 1964-1966.  He also spent some time playing for Texas Southern University in 1968 before being drafted to the Atlanta Falcons in the 16th round pick in 1969. Eddie was known as one of the “GREATEST” athletes in the 3rd Ward Community.

Eddie worked for New Hope Housing until he became ill in November of 2022.  He was loved and praised by his coworkers for all of his dedication and hard work. He will truly be missed by all.

Eddie was baptized at an early age, at the St. John Missionary Baptist Church located on Gray St in Houston, TX, by the late Rev. N.C. Crain.  As a servant of God at Pure Light Baptist Church, Eddie further dedicated himself to the ministries of the Lord and became an ordained deacon.  He later join Household of Faith Community Church in Houston, TX and continued serving on the deacon board under the leadership of Pastor Kenneth Campbell; until he was called to rest.

Deacon Eddie Anthony Hughes passed away peacefully in the wee hours of December 28, 2022, at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, TX.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Eddie and Vivian Hughes and his only brother Dale Wayne Hughes.

He leaves to cherish his memory his daughter Wanda Hughes, son, Jock Hughes, Sr.(Kimberly), grand-daughter, Jordan Hughes, grand-sons, Jock Hughes II,  Josiah Hughes, niece, Dwana Hughes and a host of family and friends.
