Our dearest Nellie Simmons, a certified nursing assistant and resident of Houston, Texas,
went home to be with her Lord and
Savior on January 7, 2023 at the age of 83 years old.
Nellie is survived by her children; Billy Jones, Jeanette Caraway,
Tressie Jones, Jerry Simmons, Kennedy Tolliver, Kimmie LaDay
(David), Ivy Gillespie, Lola Taylor (Luke), Patricia King, Debra
Simmons, more than fifty grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
She is predeceased by her sons, Jessie Thompson Jr., and John
Simmons; her mother, Juanita Simmons;
and her father, Floyd Simmons.
She was born September 1, 1939, in Pelahachie Mississippi. She
received her certification from The Nurses Aid Training
Organization Inc. and spent decades as a beloved caregiver at
Westbury Nursing Home and the Home Healthcare system.
Nellie was a devout mother and seamstress. Her family and friends
enjoyed the garments, quilts, and blankets she often gifted them.
Operating in her gift of caregiving, Nellie devoted years to looking
after her grandchildren after retirement. She was responsible for
fostering their idea of independence as she would journey across the
city of Houston with her grandchildren in tow site seeing and
managing her business.
Nellie loved her children and would often leave loving voicemails
“just checking in” on them. She was the perfect combination of sweet
and spicy, always ready at any moment to protect
herself and anyone in her care.
